Our Heritage
In 1865 Thomas Frazer Kingsmill, an Irish immigrant, opened a dry goods store on the main street of London, Ontario, Canada. Over the years, the Kingsmill family has continued to offer fine products and services from this location. The family history represents a proud tradition of retail service to residents of Southwestern Ontario and beyond.
The present building, the third to house the store on this site dates to the 1930’s when fire destroyed the previous structure. The art deco style building features original tin-plated ceilings and hardwood floors. Other unique features of the building include a pneumatic tube system used to send paperwork and change throughout the store, and an old style elevator complete with an operator. These features have survived over the years in a conscious effort to maintain the character and elegance of the building.
Over the years the business has continually evolved to keep up with ever changing consumer demands and the latest trends in retail. The most recent edition is a
Home Store
located in newly renovated space adjacent to the main floor. The two levels of contemporary furniture and accessories featured in the Home Store will appeal to those with a more contemporary taste in home furnishings.
The four floors of the store offer a broad range of goods including home furnishings, fine china and collectibles, women’s, men's and children’s fashions, cosmetics, linens, gifts, kitchen ware, luggage and much more. Take our
Store Tour
to see a selection of items from each of the four floors.
Today Kingsmill’s continues to be owned and operated by descendents of the founder. It is one of the few remaining independent department stores in Canada. Fourth and fifth generation family members, both named T.F. Kingsmill after the founder, are active in the business. For those of you who haven’t visited our store, it’s certainly worth the trip. Here are
directions on where to find us.
Despite many changes in product offerings over the years, the store’s tradition of service and quality has remained intact. Now, with this latest venture into the world of online shopping, we are pleased to offer you the same quality and service you’ve come to expect, along with the convenience of shopping from home. So, whether you visit our store in London, or our web site, we are looking forward to serving you!
